Why Choose Attic Insulation?

Asking why choose attic insulation is like asking why wear a hat when it is cold in the winter? Just like the human body, you can lose heat through the top of your home. Heat naturally rises, you want to keep that oh-so-expensive heat in.

The only way to keep heat in and keep it from escaping is to put a “hat” on your roof except you put it on the inside instead of the outside. Attic insulation is an absolute must if you want to save money on your energy costs.

Most Attics

Depending on the age of your home you may have zero insulation in your attic! You may have a bit of insulation and it may be quite outdated. The only way you know for sure is to have someone check it out.

Most attics are not “finished” in other words they are open rafters there are no floorboards and there are no wallboards. That means that there is nothing but wood and some shingles between your home and the outside temperature.

It also means that you are paying to heat the outside as your heat rises and goes right out through your roof. Most attics are not well insulated if they are part of a home that was built before the nineteen nineties.

Oh sure there was some movement toward insulating homes but the movement was slow up until the nineteen nineties when people started getting a little more serious about insulation. Of course, there has been many changes in materials. The materials used in today’s insulation is much more energy-efficient and a lot more eco friendly than it ever has been. The material is also much more readily available than it was even a decade ago.

Cost-Effectiveness

Handing over money every month to the energy company is simply a waste. You will never get the money back, you will never gain anything at all from paying high heating and cooling costs. When you insulate your attic you are getting two primary benefits.

You are going to keep more money in your pocket by giving less of it away to the energy company and you are going to increase the value of your home. A well-insulated home that is energy efficient has a higher market value than a home that is not well insulated!
